A recent study reveals that people who discontinue popular weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover shed pounds far faster than those who stop traditional lifestyle regimens.
Published data in a prominent health publication shows that while obese people frequently drop about a fifth of their total mass while on the medication, the mass returns at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.
"Users using these treatments need to be aware of the danger of rapid weight regain when the medication concludes," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain implies a return to original weight within about 18 months.
Analyzing Treatments
The research, which examined 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the effects of these new drugs with conventional dieting.
Researchers note that people who shed pounds through dieting generally experience a more gradual creep back—perhaps 100 grams monthly—after stopping.
The Reason for the Fast Rebound
Doctors propose the mechanism of the jabs is key to understanding the amplified rebound.
The injections copy a natural hormone called GLP-1, which moderates hunger.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and may also lessen responsiveness to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Discontinuation of this medication means hunger is unsuppressed, making overeating a significant risk."
An Ongoing Condition?
Medical guidelines suggest the injections for people with obesity-related health risks, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals say that, due to the likelihood of relapse, the treatment should be considered ongoing.
This view is echoed by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "emphasize the persistent nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like hypertension.
User Accounts
Users who have come off the medication explain a sudden resurgence of hunger.
"It was like something activating and I was suddenly ravenous," recalled an individual.
The struggle is compounded if patients have not adopted sustainable lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.
Growing Adoption
Figures show that a significant number of people in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with interest remaining high.
- Adoption is greater among females than males.
- The middle-aged age group shows the greatest usage rates.
- A large proportion obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
In conclusion, experts stress that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone fix and long-term success hinges on ongoing lifestyle changes.
