Pentagon Report Concludes Defense Secretary Put Troops in Jeopardy with Signal Chat.

A highly anticipated Department of Defense report has concluded that Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth violated official protocols by disclosing secret intelligence in a private Signal group, according to a source familiar with the report.

Particulars of the Event

The chat group in dispute included particulars about a planned airstrike in Yemen targeting Houthi fighters. This discussion was revealed after a reporter for the Atlantic was included as a participant.

Other officials in the chat allegedly included Senator JD Vance, CIA director John Ratcliffe, and then-national security adviser Mike Waltz. The investigation focused solely on the conduct of Hegseth, as the other officials are not employed at the Department of Defense.

Signal is a commercially offered communication application that was not approved for transmitting sensitive material.

Potential Threat to Forces

The inspector general's report determined that the information circulated by Hegseth was secret and could have endangered the lives of US troops if it had been intercepted by a hostile nation.

Notably, the report also noted that Hegseth possessed the authority to declassify the information he shared, though it was not specified whether he formally did so.

Hegseth's Response

The source indicated that Hegseth declined an interview by the inspector general. Instead, he provided a short written response.

In his response, Hegseth asserted he only shared information that would not have endangered personnel or compromised the operation. He added that he possessed the authority to declassify material and considered the inspector general to be politically motivated.

Next Steps

The finalized investigation has been provided to lawmakers. An unclassified version is expected to be made public in the coming days.
