No fewer than thirteen passengers killed and ninety-eight wounded in train derailment in Mexico.

A fatal railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the pace and handling of the country's key public works projects.

The disaster took place on the Interoceanic Train, a route developed to link the Atlantic and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote commercial progress in the area.

“We are going to meticulously determine the reasons behind this incident,” affirmed the head of state.

The leader reported that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The official noted plans to go to Oaxaca to confer with those affected.

Flagship Project of Past Leadership

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the former leader, whose term ended the prior year. This venture was closely associated with his administration's economic goals for the southern region.

Another massive railway undertaking from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the broader strategy to kickstart the economic fortunes of a comparatively disadvantaged part of the country.

Building Management and Risks Apprehensions

The building of both train projects was supervised by the armed forces, marking a significant increase of its responsibilities in public works. They were built at an fast-tracked pace, defying predictions to be at least partly launched before the end of that administration.

However, this accelerated timeline had concurrently raised significant concerns over construction quality.

  • Sunday's accident was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This involves an earlier accident this month when a train struck a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had several non-deadly derailments.

Demands for Investigation and Halt

In the wake of the catastrophe, the head of a major opposition party demanded an urgent suspension in the construction and operation of all comparable projects.

This halt was proposed while awaiting a comprehensive technical review. The party stated that the situation "demands prompt explanations."

In response, the president maintained that the train had been operating in total adherence to all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would be "responsible" in both the construction and operation of these vital projects.
