Crawley Claims Ignorance of Stokes' Controversial 'Weak Men' Remarks

England opening batter Crawley has indicated he was not familiar with statements from skipper Stokes regarding the team environment not being "weak men".

Stokes made this message in several interviews in the wake of his team's defeat in the second match of the Ashes versus Australia previously.

Ahead of the Adelaide Test, where England are staring at a series loss at the earliest opportunity, the captain noted he had allowed his sentiment to "circulate freely" within the playing group.

"I've done all the talking over the past two days that I required," said Stokes.

However, following the opener scored a knock of 85 on the penultimate day in Adelaide, he stated: "I missed those remarks."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. We take anything stated in the press with a pinch of salt," he added.

Raw Conversations and Steady Philosophy

Stokes issued his "fragile individuals" comment after England suffered a loss in Brisbane to fall 2-0 down.

The team subsequently went on a break to Noosa in the gap between the second and the upcoming Tests.

Prior to the Adelaide contest, Stokes said his players had held "honest" talks and he had asked them to "show a bit of dog" in their effort to stay alive in the Ashes battle.

Yet, Crawley stated the messaging from Stokes and head coach McCullum had remained in line with their previous three years in leadership.

"It's been extremely upbeat, unchanged," said Crawley. "It's on maintaining positivity, play our way, with great liberty. We believed we could do something special entering this game."

Australia Close of Historic Ashes Triumph

Crawley's dismissal on day four came during a crucial three-wicket burst by Australia off-spinner Lyon.

The spinner's three wickets in 20 deliveries – including the wickets of Harry Brook and Stokes himself – meant England six down for 207 chasing a notional total of 435 runs.

This means, the home team require four wickets on Sunday's final day to secure an unassailable 3-0 lead after three matches played.

Defeat will extend the English team's drought in Australia to 18 consecutive matches and ensure a fourth successive away Ashes series defeat.

This series is set to be decided in just eleven days of play – with England losing the first two Tests in two and four days each.

The last time 1921, when Australia completed a series win in the UK in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been determined more swiftly. The hosts have also triumphed in 11 days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"It's disappointing," admitted the batsman. "Our goal was to regain the Ashes and we're staring down the barrel now."

"There will still be significant pride at stake and we will certainly approach it like that," Crawley added.

"The challenge has been tough. They're a very, very good side. It was inevitably hard coming here to face them. They entered as the front-runners coming in to it they've proven why."

Pope's Place Under Scrutiny

While the opener's performance in the third Test probably answers doubts about his short-term place in the side, Pope appears under threat for his position in the Melbourne Test on Boxing Day.

The Surrey batsman was out for 17 in the team's second innings on Saturday, adding to his modest returns against the old enemy.

Across 16 Ashes innings, Pope has never made a fifty and boasts an average of just 17.62.

Only one other English batsman in over a century – Dennis Amiss – has featured as many times in the top six in the Ashes and returned a poorer average.

However, Crawley insisted any suggestion Pope is being scrutinised comes from "the media" – referring to the press – "and not within the team."

"The squad is fully aware how good of a player he is," said Crawley. "He has had a productive year if I'm honest."

"He has produced some really good knocks. This is talk externally. There is no chat like that on Ollie in the camp," Crawley finished.
