An Generosity of Unknown Individuals: The Way a Gentleman I Only Just Encountered Assisted Me Secure the Position That Transformed My Existence

During the final years of the 1980s, I was embarking on a low-cost journey to the European continent with a travel partner. Because my travel mate was interested in pursuing a master’s degree in the Big Apple, we had arranged a two-week stay there before heading to London.

We reached the postgrad residence, a big multi-story edifice on the UWS known as International House. Setting down our luggage, we made our way to the dining hall, where we got some food, took a seat, and began chatting with fellow residents.

Adjacent to my seat was an individual of Iraqi origin enrolled in an engineering program at an Ivy League institution. He asked me what I did, and I told him that I had recently completed my studies with a science degree and had been conducting research involving microscopic analysis.

He mentioned that there was an research lab at the institution – adjacent to the engineering faculty, which was why he was aware of it. He proposed that I ought to seek a position with them. I laughed it off, explaining that I was about to fly to Europe and, additionally, I didn’t have a US visa.

The next day I went out exploring, coming back to the dining hall that evening. The Iraqi student came up to me and informed me that he had organized a discussion for me with the head of the electron microscope unit at Columbia. Given that he had gone to the trouble, I showed up for the discussion – but right away explained to my prospective employer that I lacked the necessary visa, so I was likely not a suitable candidate.

In typical New York fashion – a metropolis where opportunities abound – she said: “We can make that happen. What's your start date?” I never got on that flight to London.

I held that position for a trio of years. An advantage of the role was that I got complimentary education at Columbia, and I seized the chance to complete a graduate degree in global studies.

We didn't cross paths after that and I am unaware of his name, but his selfless gesture changed my life in multiple respects. I didn't possess the bravery or self-belief to approach someone at an prestigious college and request employment. And, I had consistently hoped to take classes in another country, but lacked the financial means without that free tuition.

Perhaps most importantly, that gig at Columbia led me to a job in Zurich where I got to know my wonderful partner, with whom I am raising four amazing children. This was a pivotal life event. That helpful person changed my trajectory in life, and I’m forever grateful.
